In my lab we are interested in learning how nerve cells generate calcium signals to communicate and the role of calcium channels - the gateways of calcium entry into cells - in this process. We specifically study the transient receptor potential (TRP) family of calcium channels using the small nematode (round worm) C. elegans. C. elegans has a very simple body plan yet its TRP calcium channels are very similar to the human versions. Studying TRP channels in a much simpler organism like C.

My current research interest is on cultural constructions of childhood sexuality. My book with Gail Hawkes, Theorizing the Sexual Child in Modernity (2010, Palgrave) is a discourse analysis of childhood sexuality in medical, reform and academic discourse from the mid 19th to early 20th century. This research is also featured in several scholarly articles.
