John D. Gursky '07, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., received the Kurt Swinton Scholarship to attend the Couchiching Institute on Public Affairs in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, this summer. Gursky, a 2003 graduate of Charles W. Baker High School, plans to major in French and Canadian Studies.

The Couchiching Institute is Canada's oldest public-affairs forum. Its stated mission is to "increase the awareness and understanding of domestic and international issues amongst people in Canada, through open and inclusive discussion, without advocacy or partisanship." The theme of the 2004 conference was Religion, Pluralism and the Secular State. The Swinton Scholarship, awarded on a competitive basis through application, makes financial assistance available for youth delegates up to age 25 to attend the annual summer conference.

Gursky participates in the student government organization, the Thelomathesian Society, at St. Lawrence.
