Modern Languages and Literatures ¡Saludos! Guten Tag! Bonjour! Habari za leo! 你 好! Konnichiwa! Buon Giorno! Modern Languages and Literatures is one of the largest departments at St. Lawrence University. We have eleven full-time professors who offer courses in seven languages: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and Swahili. We have four majors: Spanish, French, German, and Multi-Languages (which combines study in three languages). There is also the possibility of doing a minor in French, Spanish or Caribbean and Latin American Studies. Our staff enjoys state-of-the-art language-learning facilities in both classroom and language labs, supported by our very own Language Resource Center. Students practice their listening and speaking skills with our new digital interactive lab system known as VirtuaLab and can take advantage of peer tutoring at all levels in Writing Centers for Spanish and French. Additionally, all of our standard classrooms are equipped with Internet access and video and audio projection systems. Students who take our courses are well prepared for study abroad. Our department has a close relationship with the Center for International and Intercultural Studies. Almost all of our majors spend a semester or more perfecting language skills in another country. Our students have lived and studied with St. Lawrence programs in Madrid, Normandy, Rouen, Vienna, Tokyo, Florence, India, Kenya, Senegal, Costa Rica, and Tunisia. They have also done independent research projects all over the world that have been funded by St. Lawrence University. Our teaching staff has all lived abroad for extended periods and conduct their classes exclusively in the target language. Our professors are strong, experienced teachers of language, but also accomplished scholars, and recognized in their respective fields. They have used their expertise to create a wide variety of fascinating courses. In the last few years our Department has given courses in Spanish and French women writers, turn-of-the century Viennese literature, the Quebec novel, Paris, modern French culture through film, World War II, contemporary Japanese culture, literature of the French Caribbean, and Amerindian Culture in contemporary Latin American literature. A growing number of St. Lawrence students see the advantages of mastering a language well enough to use it later in their careers. We graduate about 35 majors every year, many of whom have combined language study with another major in economics, history, government, sociology, fine arts, and psychology. Our graduates have gone on to rewarding careers in teaching, medicine, law, social services, international business, and the foreign service. If there is any way that I might help you, any question I might answer, or if you would like a tour of our facilities don't hesitate to call me, or send email. My number is 315-229-5766, and my e-mail is mllorente@stlawu.edu. Marina Llorente, Chair.
