Capoeira Class

Wednesdays: 4:00 - 6:00 pm
Fridays: 4:00 - 6:00 pm
Newell Field House, Multipurose Room

Capoeira (Cah-poo-WAY-dah) is a rich and dynamic art form, created by Africans in captivity in Brazil as a means of personal liberation.  Capoeira incorporates beautiful circular dance and acrobatic moves as well as powerful fighting techniques and a good dose of trickery, all set to the unique capoeira rhythms and songs from Brazil .  It is said that African slaves were not allowed to train to fight. Hence, they hid the art of capoeira within a dance-like format, set to music, to train undetected within a roda (HAW-dah), a circle or literally a wheel.  Music is a very important part of capoeira.              The class offers a complete upper and lower body workout which increases flexibility, balance and reflexes. Students will learn the basics of the art of capoeira, including the roda, movement, rhythms and songs.  It is designed to challenge the students' wits and creativity to respond to the unexpected, stimulating a deeper self-awareness that can be carried with them in their daily lives.
