New Sources at the SLU Libraries
Like most people, the SLU Libraries gets news in a variety of ways. We have a number of news databases divided here into three broad categories. Our news sources are all web-based: they are found on the SLU Libraries' web site on the News Sources page, which is available from the top level through the Indexes and Databases by Subject link.
Major News Databases
- Lexis Nexis Academic Resource for statistical, environmental, legal, and most of all, news and business information. Updated daily, mostly full text. Indexes major and regional U.S. newspapers; international papers in English and in European languages; magazines; news wire; news oriented broadcast transcripts; book reviews and arts reviews; weblogs, and university newspapers. These categories can be search together or individually, use the Power Search.
- Newspaper Source Updated daily, full text for twenty five major American newspapers and selected full text for 250 other American news sources including broadcast transcripts. Is one of the databases we buy from Ebscohost, and can be included in a search of multiple Ebscohost databases.
- Newspaper Abstracts Updated weekly, citations to articles from 50 U.S. newspapers and the Guardian from Britain. Is one of the databases we buy form OCLC, and can be included in a search of multiple OCLC databases.
- Newspaperdirect Pressdisplay Not a typo. Updated daily, full text from digital renderings of the complete print source—it is possible to read the entire paper online. International in scope, English and other languages, includes tabloid publications.
Databases of Small and Alternative News Publications
- Alt-Presswatch Updated “continuously,” full text articles from 193 independent and “alternative” American news publications. Publications from around the country and along with Lexis Nexis weblog search one of our best sources for publications outside the MSM. Includes biographical and peer reviewed material.
- Alternative Press Index Updated quarterly, citation and selective full text articles from 456 small publications concerned with politics, social justice, and ethnicity. Similar pool of publications to Alt-Presswatch.
- Ethnic Newswatch Updated “continuously,” full text articles from 279 American, Canadian, and British publications about the issues facing specific ethnic audiences. Includes biographical and peer reviewed material.
- Genderwatch Updated “continuously,” full text articles from 234 publications on gender studies, sexuality, and women’s issues. Includes biographical and peer reviewed material.
Historical News Archives
- Proquest Historical Newspapers Complete coverage to the mid nineteenth century of eight American newspapers including the New York Times (Times coverage from 1857 to 2003). Database is article level; articles and advertisements in pdf files so illustrations are retained.
- Northern New York Historical Newspapers Twenty four newspapers from Northern New York and the Adirondack region. Length of runs varies, but in some cases complete run of the complete paper available. Excellent resource for local history and genealogy.
- Center for Research Libraries U.S. Ethnic Newspapers One of the many collections of primary documents from the Center for Research Libraries. Access to microfilm of nineteenth and twentieth century newspapers published for different ethnicities in the United States, on issue but not article level. English language as well as Asian and European Language publications.
Databases such as Ebscohost Academic Search, and Reader’s Guide Abstracts do include newspapers such as the New York Times, but do not have news as their specific emphasis.
- We now have an electronic subscription to the Chronicle of Higher Education, which is open to the SLU Community. Along with all the content found in the print edition, the online version features a number of interactive and alert services such as forums, e-mail alerts, and RSS feeds. To use the interactive features one has to set up an account (https://chronicle.com/services/), however faculty can use whatever password and authorization they wish—they don’t need to know a SLU login. Content from the Chronicle online runs from 1995 to the current issue.
