Special points of interest:
· In last month’s newsletter, I misidentified Domingo Garcia as Domingo Rodriguez and Justin Cree as Jason Cree. I wanted to be sure that I corrected those errors. Sorry guys. · Thanks to all who met with and talked with Mr. Carlos Garcia during his site visit. He had a great time getting to know you and getting to see the campus. |

By all accounts, the March 27th, 8th Annual Northern New York CSTEP Network Career Exploration Symposium held here at SLU was a resounding success. Congratulations and thanks go to CSTEP Group Leaders Shirley Obioha, Toyin Showole, Randy Olivo and Steve Peraza, with the able assistance of first year member Sahiry Rodriguez and CSTEP Buddy Ana Velez for making everything come together seamlessly during the Saturday afternoon event. Ms. Kendra Rucker from the INROADS Office in Syracuse met with interested first year students and sophomores during the event’s registration time. Kudos go to Shaun D. Whitehead, SLU’s assistant chaplain, who was the keynote speaker. Shaun captivated CSTEP and STEP students and staff from Clarkson University, SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence as well as professional guests from the campuses and the community with her “Your Call to the Journey” speech. Urging CSTEP/STEP members to persist in their career quests, Shaun offered personal glimpses about her own journey.

Everyone moved from Eben Holden to the new student center for the Career Roundtable portion of the day’s program. There, students sat with professionals in CSTEP career fields to hear about preparation, workday schedules, financing education, and possible internship experiences connected to those fields. It was the chance students needed to ask the burning questions they had and to network. As is traditional with this event, the career roundtables spilled over into a buffet dinner event so that conversations could continue in an informal way over good food. Eben Holden was the site of the dinner. Also traditional to the event were the representative senior speakers from each of the three campuses. They talked of the ways CSTEP provided them with the resources and encouragement to pursue their career goals. The dinner speaker this year was Mr. Carlos Garcia, the New York State Education Department Program Officer for CSTEP. He shared his own story of his travels through a blinding snowstorm to get here as a metaphor for a life’s journey. (See photos on p.4) |
