Politics, and Environment in the Age of Terror", Eben
Holden Dining Hall
David
W. Orr, Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics
at Oberlin College, is this year’s colloquium lecturer. Professor
Orr received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania
in 1973 in International Relations. In addition to his long tenure
at Oberlin, Dr. Orr has taught at Agnes Scott College, The University
of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and will be the Walker Ames Visiting
Professor at the Graduate School of the University of Washington
in 2005.
David Orr is the author of four books: The Last Refuge: Patriotism,
Politics, and the Environment in the Age of Terror (Island Press,
2004); The Nature of Design (Oxford, 2002); Earth in Mind (Island
Press, 1994); Ecological Literacy (SUNY, 1992) and co-editor of
The Global Predicament (North Carolina, 1979) and The Campus and
Environmental Responsibility (Jossey-Bass, 1992). He has published
over 120 articles in scientific journals, social science publications,
and popular magazines. He has lectured at over 100 institutions
throughout North American and Europe. In an era when scholars are
writing more and more specialized texts, David Orr is a leader
in holistic thinking; he links politics, economics, history, and
environmental studies and challenges both individuals and institutions
to expand their thinking.
David Orr is perhaps best known for his pioneering work in ecological
literacy and the role and responsibility of higher education to
prepare a generation of citizens who will work toward a more sustainable
world. His more recent work in ecological design culminated in
the fund raising for and design of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center
for Environmental Studies at Oberlin College . The New York Times
described this building as “the most remarkable” of
a new generation of college buildings, and the U.S. Department
of Energy selected it as one of the 30 “milestone buildings” of
the 20 th century.
A reception will follow Professor Orr's lecture.
Wednesday, October 20, noon: Luncheon, Eben Holden North
Dining Room
Following the lunch, respondents will react to the lecture delivered
