This course is designed for students who would like to learn about political, economic and social development in Burma/Myanmar. The goal is to introduce the students to Burma/Myanmar's quest for democracy, its ethnic politics, civil society, economy, health, education and foreign relations. By the end of the course, students will be able to answer why the country's name is so contested, why Burma has been under military rule for so many years, and why such a resource-rich country has become so poor.
