UTOPIA IN ETHIOPIA:

GENDER, CULTURE, AND COMMUNITY

SOC. 248 A (3.6 credits)
Prof. Abye Assefa and Florence Molk
Dates : May 27 - June 17, 2009
Program fee: $4,000. Airfare not included.

This course explores a remarkable, quasi-utopian community established in Awra Amba, in the north of Ethiopia. Here the patriarchal norms of Ethiopian Christian and Islamic society have been displaced by intentionally reassigning gender roles; furthermore, Awra Amba is open to people of all faiths, and this, ecumenical approach contributes to the utopian character of this enclave. In addition to experiencing and analyzing the cultural inventions of Awra Amba, students will gain background in traditional Ethiopian culture. A visit to a medical clinic which treats young girl victims of institutional sexism reinforces an understanding of the damage that traditional gender norms perpetuate.
