It is possible for students to participate in non-SLU study abroad programs and receive academic credit at SLU, but there are several key steps to follow. Students interested in a non-St. Lawrence University program should meet with Nancy Pierce, the director of off-campus programs. The application to the non-SLU program must include forms from SLU, and it must be approved by the Committee on International and Intercultural Studies.
The eligibility requirements for approval for non-SLU programs are slightly higher than for many SLU programs. Students must have a record of academic performance that demonstrates ability to meet the challenges of off-campus study without the academic and other support that SLU offers on campus and on its programs; a GPA of at least 3.0 is expected. Students must demonstrate strong academic preparation and academic reasons for studying in this particular country/institution. Applications must also show evidence of the student's capacity for independence, self-reliance, and maturity. If the non-SLU program is located in a country where SLU maintains a program, the student must make an exceptionally strong case that his or her academic interests are significantly better served by a different program.
The completed Non-SLU Programs Application must be received by the Center for International and Intercultural Studies on or before September 25 (spring semester programs) or February 20 (fall semester and academic year programs).
Unlike SLU off-campus programs, any credit earned on a non-SLU program will be transfer credit (not residence credit) and will not be included in the GPA. Also, SLU financial aid does not apply on non-SLU programs, and students should check with the Financial Aid Office to confirm the status of their federal and state aid and loans. Students who attend an abroad program without the approval of the International Education Advisory Committee must withdraw from the university. On appeal they may be able to transfer a maximum of 1 unit upon readmission to SLU.
Students wishing to study at a foreign institution or on a non-SLU study abroad program during the summer should consult with both the Center for International and Intercultural Studies and with the registrar to arrange for transfer credit for summer school.
SLU offers a number of January and Summer term courses off campus; these may be found at the SLU Summerterm site.
