The following states have granted St. Lawrence University exempt status which makes the university exempt from sales taxes normally charged for goods and services purchased within that state.     Merchants will generally require a copy of this certificate and proof that the university is the direct purchaser of the goods or services in order to waive the sales tax.   Using a purchase order, university check, university purchasing card, or travel card to pay for the purchase proves that the university is the direct purchaser.

Each vendor used, on each trip, will need their own copy of the certificate.

Not all states require on-line reservation companies to accept tax certificates.  If you are
planning on making on-line reservations, hotel, car rental, flights, etc. check with the company
to see if they accept tax certificates.  They will not give you the exempt status unless you ask for it.

Copies of exemption certifcates may be obtained by contacting Julie Rubado in Campus Support Services.  The states which have granted exempt status to St. Lawrence University are listed below.

  • Arkansas (exemption only applies to tangible personal property)
  • Connecticut (sales tax on meals and lodging is not exempt)
  • Florida (exemption only allowed if payment by University check)
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Kansas (exemption only allowed if payment by University check)
  • Kentucky
  • Maine
  • Massachussets (sales tax on lodging is not exempt and exemption only allowed if payment by University check)
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Rhode Island (sales tax on lodging is not exempt and exemption only allowed if payment by University check)
  • Tennesse
  • Texas
  • Vermont (sales tax on meals and lodging is not exempt)
  • Wisconsin
Utah has granted the university tax exempt status, but not issued an exemption clertificate.  Utah will refund sales taxes upon receipt of a refund coupon and proof of purchase.  Departments charged Utah sales tax should notify Brigett Morrow in the Business Office and she will request a refund.
