Useful Maps of Africa- A wonderful collection of online maps avaliable for download by the University of Texas Austin.

 

www.un.org: United Nations website

www.allafrica.com: An important site for contemporary newspaper articles related to Africa. Brings together articles from dozens of African and international papers. Organized by theme and region and is also searchable.

 

http://www.h-net.org/~africa/ : H-Net is a list serve that allows scholars interested in Africa from around the globe to share research ideas, news and other information.

 

www.africanstudies.org: The African Studies Association (ASA) is the major professional organization in the United States for scholars and students of African Studies.This association hosts annual conferences, and publishes two major journals, African Studies Review and African Issues (formerly Issue: A Journal of Opinion).

 

www.hrw.org: Human Rights Watch is a global watchdog organization that works extensively in Africa. This site includes a number of free reports and papers avaliable in full text.

 

www.africa-union.org: African Union was established in summer of 2002 to replace the Organization of African Unity (OAU).  This website replaces the old www.oau.org website.

 

www.africarecovery.org : Website of the major public relations part of the United Nations that also includes the important quarterly journal Africa Recovery. (now called Africa Renewal)

 

www.africaaction.org: Major lobbying/activist organization based in the United States

www.oxfam.org: Major international organization with significant coverage of Africa/African issues

 

http://www.unicef.org/- UNICEF works with issues affecting children and youth worldwide. They maintain country specific pages and a number of reports and articles are avaliable free online.

 

www.hrcr.org -   The human rights/constitutional rights division of the African Union .

 

www.thecommonwealth.org  -  The Commonwealth is a major international organization of former British colonies now independent countries, many of which are in Africa and Caribbean regions.

 

CIA World Factbook- use statistical data and brief country overviews of all African countries.

 

African History Sourcebook: Run through Fordham University, this a great resource to find free online primary sources in African history.

 

www.sahistory.org.za : A well run public history site with great resources for students on all aspects of South African History.

 

www.copla.org (Coalition of Progressive Liberians in America ) www.fol.org  (Friends of Liberia ): These Three websites that provide a wealth of information about Liberia and its connection to the African diaspora.

 

www.onliberia.org   -  This is a website maintained by Indiana University which contains an extensive and very valuable collection project on Liberia .

 

www.sierra-leone.org   -  A major website on a major West Africa country central to disapora studies. This website has many links to important documents, speeches, Friends of Sierra Leone around the world.

 

http://kamusiproject.org/- Hosted by Yale University this site is an internet dictionary and resource page for Swahili language study.

 

Center for Research Libraries (CRL): The Center for Research Libraries is a repository for large collections of primary source material. Descriptions of their collections and their catalog are available on the CRL web site, and the site is linked from a number of places on our library web site. We have an interlibrary loan arrangement with CRL, so materials in the CRL collection you might be interested in can be requested through ILLiad. Simply use the appropriate ILLiad form (use a free text request for microfilm), and when making the request be sure to designate CRL requests as such. Universities/Area Studies Centers -  There are several African Studies Centers and African/Africana Studies Programs  in a number of universities in the United States which are important sources of information and websites. Most offer graduate programs in African Studies and have major research collections related to Africa. Below are just a few:
