The St. Lawrence Blog
Who is St. Lawrence University? We are a group of people with countless adventures and even more stories. The St. Lawrence Blog gives our students, faculty and staff the chance to tell their tales, in their own words and in their own way. Sharing these anecdotes in one place gives our community the chance to show how creative, daring and passionate we are about what we do. Alone, these stories are powerful; together they define St. Lawrence.

The fresh rays of a springtime sun were shining on the April day that I visited St. Lawrence University for an Admitted Students Open House during my senior year of high school. During this visit, I would go on to taste the full experience that a student here could expect.
Every day at five o’clock, a student bell ringer plays the bells of Gunnison Memorial Chapel. From all across campus you can hear bells chiming, playing everything from the alma mater, to a “Happy Birthday” request, to something that sounds suspiciously like the Flintstones theme song.
When St. Lawrence asks me to participate, my motto is to say yes as often as possible. I think very deeply about the commitment and the impact of what I can offer. I don’t know how to do anything half baked – it’s just not in my DNA.
Stark white and cardboard, it is fairly unassuming at first glance. However, my concert box contains evidence of my entire musical history, one that began with my dad teaching me to sing with Bob Dylan’s nasally twang at age four.
As an incoming freshman, I had many anxieties. Would I make friends? Would I do well in my classes? Would I like my roommate? Would I have anything to eat?
Just three years ago, my mom convinced me to go Greek. As my time at St. Lawrence is coming to a close, there’s only one thing left to say—Thanks, Mom!
In the past four semesters of giving tours to prospective St. Lawrence students, I have learned many things.
Some may call me a theatre nerd...and I think I’d have to agree.
Shovel, beacon, probe. Helmet, mountain bike, kayak. Climbing harness, tent, hammer. Surfboard, swimsuit, St. Lawrence van.
It's 7:58 a.m. during my first fall at St. Lawrence. I run across the Quad, coffee and phone in hand, and near the entrance to Carnegie in a panic.
Sitting in the car with my mother and grandmother, I am in disbelief at how long this drive is taking. I have been sitting in the back of my mother’s car for over five hours and I still have at least two more hours to go.
The first time (and only time) I visited St. Lawrence, I fell in love. Not only with the atmosphere of campus and the community but also the opportunities that St. Lawrence has to offer. One of the things I was most excited about on my visit day at St.
As I sit in the Student Center, munching on a Pub Cookie, I look around at all of my amazing friends and peers here at St. Lawrence. I still can’t believe that almost a year ago today I received my acceptance letter to this special place!
