Twenty students will be inducted into three language honorary societies at the Senior Reception hosted by the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures on May 3th, 2012. 

St. Lawrence’s Eta Delta Chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society, will welcome Michael Badali, Alexandra Burger, Elizabeth Choiniere, Kyle Donaldson, Madeline Garone, Maura Hamel, Teo Jackson, Stella Leach, Ante Letica, Emily Merrifield, Charlotte Noordsy, and Madeleine Poole.

Students in the seminar Hispanic Protest Music (Special Topic: Spanish 448) are preparing a Festival of Protest Music on Thursday, April 26th at 4:30 pm in the Winston Room, Student Center. They will be doing poster presentations about their research in Hispanic protest music and will be sharing with everyone four emblematic protest songs. Refreshments will be served.

Chinese calligraphy is visible at every corner of the Chinese daily life. This is so, for Chinese calligraphy has two roles to perform, functioning as a language and meanwhile as the twin sibling of painting. Interestingly, calligraphy was not necessarily limited to brush writing. The combination of chisel scribing and brush writing in the early stage initiated the creation of seals, the invention of rubbing methods, and eventually developed to typography printing in the 10th Century.

If you like poetry and are interested in the need for Peace and Social Justice the Poetry for Peace reading series could provide you with the space to explore the intersections between creative writing, social commitment and performance. You are more than welcome to read a poem written by you or your favorite poet.
If you want, you can read poems in languages other than English but you should provide the translation in English as well.
