Dr. Ilia Casanova-Marengo earned her Ph.D. in Spanish-American literature from Rutgers University (New Brunswick, New Jersey) and came to St. Lawrence in 1998, where she has taught all levels of Spanish language and courses on Spanish American literature and culture. Her book El intersticio de la colonia: ruptura y mediación en la narrativa antiesclavista cubana published by Editorial Iberoamericana (Madrid 2002) studies the discursive ambiguities and fissures in several texts representative of nineteenth century Cuban anti-slavery narrative as the subversive strategies used by their authors to confront colonialism, narrate their ideologies as subaltern subjects and imagine a national identity beyond Spanish colonial rule.
